OBJECTIVES Understanding the carriage of dangerous cargo Familiarizing the contents of the IMDG & IATA rulings Explaining the classes of DG and packing groups OUTLINES Background and Focus of IMO (International Maritime Organization) and IMDG code: Goods should be considered dangerous on the basis of their properties and characteristics Labelling should be developed indicating the kind of danger for each substance, material, or article Classification of dangerous goods into the 9 classes under the IMDG ruling: Class 1 of Explosives Class 2 of Gases Class 3 of Flammable Liquids Class 4 of Flammable solids Class 5 of Oxidizing Substances Class 6 of Toxic and Infectious Substances Class 7 of Radioactive Materials Class 8 of Corrosives Class 9 of Miscellaneous Articles Packing Groups of IATA Dangerous Goods in relation to the degree and kind of danger: Packing Group 1 for goods presenting great danger Packing Group 2 for goods presenting medium danger Packing Group 3 for goods presenting minor danger Instructions for the packing of cargo in freight containers The correct usage of labels and placards, marking and packaging from inner, outer to overpack Delivery procedures of cargo tendering in FCL and ULD for Dangerous Goods Imported and Exported: The role and responsibilities of Freight Forwarder, Shipping Agent, Shipper, and Manufacturer The role and responsibilities of Ship’s master, Principal Shipping Agent, and Port Operators Dangerous Goods Transport Documentation Requirement and the Shipper’s Declaration Form: The importance of relevant information on Shipper, Consignee, and Description of Goods in sequence The importance of supplementary information on Proper Shipping Name and Total or Limited Quantities Practical exercise on the steps to identify, classify and reference to applicability of DG packing procedures Group assignment on avoidance of mishandling and misuse of DG guidelines.
